About us (English)

The NDL Lab is a website for conducting field trials of fundamental technologies that contribute to the development of next-generation library systems.

The NDL Lab provides researchers with the server environment of the National Diet Library, as well as the digitized material data and bibliographic data held by the National Diet Library. The researchers use those resources to conduct experiments with software. As a result, many people can try the software developed by researchers through the NDL Lab. At the same time, the NDL Lab releases experimental systems and data using fundamental technologies researched and developed by the National Diet Library, and is working to further develop system functions through feedback. By releasing the results of such experiments, the NDL Lab aims to contribute to the improvement of the convenience of Japan's next-generation library services.

In addition, the NDL Lab introduces these research results, examples of utilization of the data held by the National Diet Library, information on events, and more. Please utilize the contents of the NDL Lab.

History

In response to the rapid progress of information technology, the Research and Development for Next-Generation Systems Office was established in the Digital Information Department (at that time, it was established in the Digital Information Services Division, now the Digital Information Planning Division) of the National Diet Library in October 2011, for the purpose of conducting research and development as well as demonstration experiments to create new library services applying advanced information technology. The NDL Lab was established in 2013 as a place where the National Diet Library collaborates with researchers at universities and research institutions and utilizes their knowledge for the research and study of leading-edge technologies.
